Collectors preserve scarce beer labels from Iraq to pre Prohibition

DJ Johnson collects beer labels from around the world including Iraq and pre Prohibition bottles. The collection includes novelty sets from Tidwell Brewing Blythe California and Old West Brewing Las Cruces New Mexico. Johnson notes most labels are worth pennies though some rare items fetch hundreds. He acquires labels by shopping, direct requests to breweries, or trading with others and started a free labeling service in the 1970s with the American Breweriana Association. He removes labels by soaking bottles and scraping with a razor blade.
