Army staff sergeant James Hunter, 25, of the 101st Airborne Division, was killed by an insurgent blast during a foot patrol in Afghanistan less than a month into his third overseas tour. Avon and Avon Lake fuel regional growth in 2009 estimates

Census estimates show Avon gaining 328 residents from 2008 to 2009 and a total increase of 5 178 since 2001. Charities face funding cuts from United Way in Lorain County

Catholic Charities Community Services of Lorain County reports a 50 percent drop in United Way funds, cutting $20,000 for Communities That Care and $30,000 for Older Adult Services. Former detention home guard cleared of felonious assault charge

James Catalano, 48, a supervisor at the Lorain County Juvenile Detention Home, was found not guilty by County Common Pleas Judge Edward Zaleski of felonious assault for pushing an inmate face-first into a table after breaking up a fight. The 21 year employee was fired after the July 24 incident. his attorney argued he followed procedures as an unruly teen resisted being turned to the wall.
