Railway Fete To Mark First East West Link
PROMONTORY Utah Almost 68 years after the driving of the golden spike that joined the East and West in the first trans continental railroad the last surviving crew member Thomas ODonnell 95 of Omaha died close to the anniversary. About 1100 people were present when engines of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads met here May 10 1869. ODonnell and his red shirted Irishmen helped lay track fast to the Missouri River and the milestone stands as a record. Western railroads plan June ceremonies to honor the anniversary.
