Roosevelt program battered by storms of opposition

Washington June 13 Administration leaders pressed President Roosevelt's must legislation through fierce opposition. The Senate planned a vote on the social security bill as the cornerstone of recovery and reform while the House weighed the Wagner Labor Disputes Bill. Debate limits were set to three hours to speed passage amid unified GOP and Democratic resistance. The drive included AAA amendments and increased Agricultural Department powers, with claims of unconstitutionality and confiscation by critics. Senate leaders sought early passage, facing a private company amendment on old age pensions and payroll taxes, while opposition centered on constitutional concerns. Additional measures, including TVA amendments and holding company reform, faced slower progress. Hearings continued on key bills such as NRA coal, liquor control, railroad, and motor bus regulation.
