Former President Calvin Coolidge argues in cosmopolitan magazine that World War debts were not a joint burden and that if Europe fails to pay, Americans must. He rejects universal subsidies, warns against remitting debts via export credits, and says the US cannot cancel its loans. He notes Britain is the only European power paying meaningfully and defends US blamelessness in the war’s origins.
