Conferees Clash Over Isle of Salary Reductions
Washington June 10 Conferees on the 149 million Economy Bill prepared to reopen the dispute over flat government salary cuts versus furloughs. Senate plan shifted to a straight 10 percent cut for all salaries of 1000 or more, while House members led by Rep McDutie favored direct reductions. Proponents say furloughs would push private industry to a five day week and deter wage cuts, while opponents warn of favoritism and departmental discrimination. The furlough would affect workers earning over 1200 yearly, cutting pay about 8.3 percent, requiring a month off with pay decisions by the employee and supervisor. Per diem navy yard workers would face a straight five day week.
