Fed chief warns prices may rise with recovery
Washington UPI Arthur Burns, chairman of the Federal Reserve, testified to the House Banking Committee that prices tend to move up early in a recovery and warned the inflation risk as the economy improves. He defended a moderate 5 to 7.5 percent money-supply rise while liberals urge more expansion. Burns pegged growth around 8 percent next year with unemployment dipping to 7.5–8 percent, and refused to forecast interest rates, saying such a prediction would force him to resign.
