Auto talks focus on pensions and job security
UAW wage and benefit demands loom as talks open with General Motors on July 16. Industry sources note pension upgrades, paid time off, and job security as top goals, with retirement cost of living allowances and shorter work time among priorities. They cite historic patterns, wage averages, and concerns over absenteeism, productivity, and health care costs. The union seeks broader fringe benefits and raises awareness of changes across plants and affiliates.
