Elyria schools face state funding setback and cuts
Elyria City Schools face a financial setback after a state funding bill. Superintendent Showalter notes expected added state funds for 1980 dropped from January projections to about 479000 over last year, with only about 300000 in basic aid. Remaining increases fund programs like special education and transportation, and now 97 percent of program costs must be covered elsewhere. The district plans to absorb a 110000 shortfall in 1979 half of fiscal 1980, hoping property taxes will offset the gap.

Youths roams Georgetown area prompt residents to act
Walter Biegacki of 773 Georgetown told council Monday that teens and children roam the Georgetown street at night making noise, drinking beer in cars, leaving cans and bottles on lawns, and causing property disruption. He described youths as animals and said police often fail to respond. Council President Richard Seward noted the issue and referred it to Safety Service Director Richard Bergman for more protection. Bergman said the problem is city wide and cited vandalism to his car. Turn to page 44.

Australian police arrest Olmsted stab suspect Geiger in Bathurst
Gordon J Geiger, charged with the June 7 stabbing deaths of his parents in North Olmsted, was arrested by Australian police in Bathurst, New South Wales. He allegedly entered Australia illegally, flying in on June 29 before his arrest. Authorities plan extradition with U.S. State Department help. the FBI had issued a nationwide warrant labeling him armed and dangerous. The victims were found on Sherwood Drive, and Geiger, 26, had previously lived in the area as a foreign exchange student in the late 1960s. Weather: mostly sunny, highs in the upper 70s.
