Claremont California universities form a six college cluster centered on Pomona with shared facilities. The group emphasizes high quality education, cross registration, and a common library system while each school preserves its own presidency and campus character.
The cluster plan remains solid financially and academically though social competition from state schools is noted. Attending Claremont costs over 4200 annually versus 2200 for state students, yet reserves, surpluses, and endowments total 185 million. Bowen warns rich can economize while poor cannot, as Claremont aims to grow as a nationally reputated center of scholarship and learning amid a complex administration.
Claremont scholars debate the social impact of nearby Pitzer and Scripps while officials map growth for a private college cluster. Chancellor Bowen notes easy creation of new schools as land and central facilities exist, with law, medical, and architecture programs under consideration.
The Claremont Colleges cluster, including Pomona, Pitzer, Scripps, Harvey Mudd, and the Graduate School, maintains independent governance but shares boards for joint services. Disparities in finances and student aid persist amid efforts to diversify, with campus life described as largely segregated and interaction limited by the multi-campus setup.
