Clashes Near Quang Tri City Escalate Vietnam War
South Vietnamese and Communist forces each field about 1000 men with tanks two miles south of Quang Tri City in fresh fighting. Hue comes under shelling for the second straight day as U.S. jets, B52s, and paratroopers back a daylight push toward Quang Tri. U.S. pilots report destroying a coal plant near Haiphong and hitting targets near Vinh while a naval jet crashes north of the DMZ with the pilot missing. Hue’s shelling raises fears of a broader assault as the 30,000-strong Hue garrison has been reduced to about 10,000 during the northward drive into Quang Tri.
