UAW Leader Demands Freeze on Social Security Taxes
United Auto Workers President Douglas Fraser urged Congress to freeze Social Security taxes at the 1980 level and seek more equitable funding options. He opposed proposed cuts to disability pensions and other benefits without wide discussion, calling tax increases a wage cut that reduces workers’ buying power. The Advisory Council on Social Security is reviewing solvency and fairness, including coverage for working wives and federal, state, and local employees. Fraser called payroll taxes regressive.
