AmShip vote set Sunday amid long UAW strike

Union leaders announced a Sunday vote at the UAW hall on Baumhart Road to end the 142 day Amship strike against American Shipbuilding Co. Negotiations resumed at Saw Mill Creek Lodge in Huron after adjournment in December. Key issue remains an $8 million company damage suit and improved pension and working conditions. Tax exempt property rolls soar in Ohio up here too

Ohio Public Expenditure Council reports a surge in exempted real property since 1968 rising 84.6 percent in ten years to 7.2 billion dollars while taxable property grew 78.5 percent. Lorain County exempted value climbed to 183.3 million with only 1.6 percent growth from 1977 to 1978, and since 1968 exempted property rose by 120.7 million. nonpaying owners shift tax burden to other taxpayers as government services require funding.

County to Lay Off 137 CETA Workers in January

Federal funding cuts will reduce county CETA staff by 137 on January 12. Six sheriff's department CETA employees will depart this month, with further layoffs planned in October to meet new limits. Remaining county program staff total 129 after the cuts, with Lorain and Elyria transferring or reallocating workers.
