Firefighters faced frozen hydrants but drew water from a nearby pond as they battled the blaze in two joined buildings linked by a breezeway. A special advisory committee to the Elyria Board of Education calls for major cost reductions including closing two to five elementary schools and transferring Franklin Junior High students. It urges a moderate levy to balance the budget and fund teacher pay raises, with others to cut staff and limit English and social studies courses as last resorts.

Trucker narrowly escapes brick attack by strikers in Pa

Larry Miller a 33 year old Amherst ex Marine sergeant and Larry Wozniak of Vermilion were hit by bricks rocks and ball bearings hurled from behind parked cars as they drove through Glenshaw Pennsylvania on Route 8. The attack blamed on striking Fraternal Association of Steel Haulers caused about 2000 dollars in truck damage. Both drivers treated and released. Police have no suspects. Miller said his glasses saved his sight and warned the strike activity could have killed bystanders if the trucks had swerved.
