Elyria High basketball coach Dick Roth says he has resigned after another tough year ending with a 76-71 overtime loss to Midview in the sectional. Roth, 38, cites heavy pressure and frustration, noting he put in full effort but did not secure wins, and reflects on balancing life and coaching duties.
Ford confirms plans to furlough about 1,200 workers at Engine Plant No. 2 in Brook Park for up to three years during a conversion to smaller engines. Plant shutdown is 18-24 months, with layoffs 30-36 months, while Ford pledges to stay in Cleveland and aid laid-off employees.
About 110 members of United Auto Workers Local 1250 at Ford Brook Park engine complex staged a demonstration at Ford world headquarters in Dearborn Michigan. Many had been laid off since last summer and sought wage records to enroll in a federal benefit program to replace lost income.
President Carter defeats Kennedy in the Democratic primary with 53,586 votes to 41,540 as Brown places third and Mondale state ties emerge. In the Republican contest Reagan leads Bush with 50 percent, Baker and Anderson follow, shaping delegate counts for the summer conventions.
Columbia Gas of Ohio chairman Marvin E. White warned at a town meeting in Elyria that deregulation in 1985 could double natural gas prices from today’s about $3 per thousand cubic feet, with inflation at 18 percent this year and 13 percent last year. He cited competition from heating oil and discussed rate controls and local negotiating rights under home rule.
