Groundhog Day storm closes schools and snows Appalachia
A regional winter storm disrupted travel and education with heavy snow in the Central Appalachians and the Middle Atlantic Seaboard. Five inches fell in southwestern Virginia, with lighter amounts across Virginia, North Carolina, northern Georgia and eastern Tennessee. Flurries stretched from North Dakota to the Ohio Valley, while rain hit parts of the West, Texas and Florida. The Army Corps of Engineers paused efforts to blast a channel through an ice gorge blocking the Ohio River. Weather noted widespread cold in the East, with warmer readings in Florida, California, and the Pacific Northwest. Prognosticators Punxsutawney Phil and the Sun Prairie Tradition were cited amid other forecasts for a six-week winter.
