Film director Roman Polanski, 44, arrived in Paris after fleeing the United States hours before a planned sentencing for sex relations with a 13 year old girl. French authorities may decide on extradition to the U.S. Polanski faces probation to 50 years in prison.
Ohio utilities warn coal strike delays threaten a major power shortfall in the next weeks. UMW District 6 president Guzek says settlement is near but ratification may take 10 days, with potential 25 percent electricity cuts next week for factories and businesses in 24 counties served by Columbus & Southern Ohio Electric and Ohio Edison.
Agricultural damage from the January blizzard totals 5.6 million across four counties, with Lorain over 3 million. Losses cover crops buildings machinery and livestock, including 1.79 million in building damage and a 140,000 hit to Van Wingerden greenhouse. About 2,000 farmers affected. homes and pipes suffer major losses in Huron.
Amtrak will staff Elyria station starting February 16 with one ticket agent operating split shifts. The agent will manage baggage and ticketing for two Lake Shore Limited trains daily en route to Chicago and Boston. Duties span 7 30 to 4 30 for the westbound train and 9 to midnight for the eastbound. The modular station replaces the open shelter, offering a waiting area restrooms and planned phones and chairs.

President Carter called on all Americans in a White House address to back the Panama Canal treaties. He framed approval as a right and a strong, fair act, saying it protects the canal and shows a confident, creative nation.
On page A-3 Carter speaks from a blazing fire to answer questions about the canal treaties and to build public support. He says opposition stems from misunderstanding and misinformation and urges Americans to hear the facts ahead of Senate debate.
Stockbridge High School basketball coach Pat Hogan predicted a victory as his 0-14 Stockbridge Indians beat St Nazi anz JFK Prep 45-35 to end a winless stretch dating back to November 1972. Fans flooded the court in celebration, cutting down nets and sharing relief after a long drought.
