United Press International reports talks between United Mine Workers and coal industry negotiators stalled Friday, extending the 61 day strike the union calls the longest in its history, despite optimism about reaching a new contract.

FBI joins Alabama mine violence scene in Oakman clash

In Oakman Alabama the FBI joined state and local police as more than 200 riot troopers used tear gas to break a blockade of about 200 striking miners freeing seven non union workers trapped in a house amid gunfire. The incident followed earlier violence in Indiana and a widening labor dispute involving the United Mine Workers and Bituminous Coal Operators Association as talks stalled and mediation continued.
