United Press International reports talks between United Mine Workers and coal industry negotiators stalled Friday, extending the 61 day strike the union calls the longest in its history, despite optimism about reaching a new contract.
In Oakman Alabama the FBI joined state and local police as more than 200 riot troopers used tear gas to break a blockade of about 200 striking miners freeing seven non union workers trapped in a house amid gunfire. The incident followed earlier violence in Indiana and a widening labor dispute involving the United Mine Workers and Bituminous Coal Operators Association as talks stalled and mediation continued.
Mrs. Young says she focuses on making official functions warm and informal while hosting at home for diplomats and world leaders, reflecting a diplomatic approach to social events as reported by UPI.
Moscow reports Cosmos 964 collided with another object causing it to crash in Canada. Tass quotes scientist Leonid Sedov saying no weapons on board and that the nuclear power unit could exist under international law.
