Lewis May Have Wrecked His Power
Washington reports indicate John L. Lewis may have weakened his leverage to secure a new industry wide coal contract. Edward R. Burke’s resignation as president of the Southern Coal Producers Association could signal the end of the 1945 national agreement. Burke’s stance favored talks after government seizure of mines and prompted further debate within the association on bargaining scope and timing.
