School Board Accepts Tax Rate Certification in Elyria

The Elyria City Board of Education approved the county budget commission tax rate certification after delaying for more information. The 4.14 mills for schools, within the 10 mill limitation, compare to last year’s 4.06 mills. 0.60 mill remained for allocation, split between the city and schools.

Last evening the annual installation of Frank B Harmon Lodge No. 663 F and A M took place at the Masonic Temple with Most Worshipful A A Stephens Past Grand Master as installing officer. Edward N. Reusser was installed Worshipful Master with a full slate of officers and warrants presented including a twenty five year pin to George Wieseke who had served as Tyler.

Lysaght to Return to Fire Dept Tomorrow

Firefighter Lysaght, injured while fighting a blaze at the Veterans of Foreign Wars building on November 22, expected to resume duty tomorrow. Fire Chief Bates said Lysaght, who sustained torn shoulder ligaments, was advised to rest after the fire. The report notes limited attendance at the Legion Home due to high membership and urges veterans to seek aid through the service officer as the Legion maintains storage facilities for claims.

Progress Report On 30 Inch Water Line Work

Service Director I D Faxon said the last test on the new 30 inch cast iron force main from the pumping station to Elyria Avenue was approved yesterday. If weather stays favorable the job should be completed and the line placed in service by the first of the year.

Receipts and prices for cattle hogs and sheep reported with mixed demand. Livestock market activity varied by species with varied price ranges for cows and calves. Grain prices set for wheat corn oats and beans with regional listings. A motorist was fined for reckless driving and a sidewalk accident caused minor injuries.

Prize Photos On Display At Elyria High School Library

An exhibit features 82 prize winning photos from the 1946 National High School Photographic Awards at Elyria High School library through Friday. Kurt Wieland, an former Elytra student, won five dollars for a photo titled The Welders. Grand prize was $500 for a study of a horse and wagon in a heavy snowstorm by Evan Richards of Schenectady New York.

Make Survey Of Youth Activities Plans

Plans were made for a community youth activity survey to gauge what youths want to do with their time. The steering committee, with members from Girl Scouts YWCA PTA YMCA Community Chest Girls Friendly Club and Christian Education group, met at the YMCA to organize with Mrs Lissa Weusler as temporary chair and Ralph Tibball as secretary. Everett Palmer will chair the survey with Hennetta Nichols and Mel Gerald Leonard assisting. completion targeted within three weeks.

Red Cross Institute to Open at Local Y N C A

The American Red Cross will hold a home service and veterans claims institute at the local Y N C A this Thursday and Friday. Miss Edna Schropp announces sessions led by Miss Catherine Little on home services and Z B Vickery on veterans claims with regional Red Cross delegates invited from several counties. George Calvert will open the meetings with a welcome, and a luncheon for delegates will be served at the Gray Stone Hotel on both days.

Meecha Fined For DUI. Driving Privilege Suspended

Matthew B. Meecha of 122 Northrup Street was fined $50 plus costs and had his driving rights suspended for six months after arraignment before Mayor A. R. Agate on a driving while intoxicated charge. He was arrested around 1 am at West Avenue and Lodi Street while operating a truck.

Discussion Group Leaders Talk Over Methods

Representatives from most of the 83 local Farm Bureau councils in Lorain county attended the 4t meeting at the Farm Bureau Co operative offices. The program aimed to improve discussion techniques and prepare leaders for talks on The Farm Family at upcoming megings. Dr Louis Raths of Ohio State University demonstrated a helpful motion picture and urged bringing all problems into the open with patience in discussions. Other guests included Carl Hutchinson from the Ohio Farm Bureau education department, Win Bryan from the education department, and two men from Canada Billy Wake and John Main.

Vegetable Growers Hear Editor at Avon Dinner meeting

More than 100 vegetable growers from Lorain Erie and Cuyahoga counties attended the Northern Ohio Truck Farmers Association annual dinner in Avon. Officers were postponed until the January educational meeting. Mack Sauer, Leesburg editor, gave a humorous talk. Carl C. Deeds reported on junior vegetable gardening work and noted six Lorain County boys with leave by airplane to Boston for a national vegetable judging competition. He urged more efforts to involve boys next year.
