Clean River Sunday set for Oct 11 event

The Elyria Jaycees and The Chronicle Telegram launch a one day river cleanup from Rt 10 south of Elyria to Rt 254 north of the city. Volunteers from service clubs youth groups 4H schools and others will gather to haul debris from the Black River west branch.

Plane chase nets hashish seizure tied to international ring

A private plane loaded with hashish, pursued by Lebanese helicopters and British jets, landed near Baalbeck then escaped to Crete with 1,452 pounds of high quality hash. Five Americans were arrested in Crete. two more were seized in France. The operation spanned nine countries and involved Interpol and U.S. officials.

Gilligan Takes Party Helm as Democrats End Convention

Jonny Gilligan, Democratic nominee for governor, assumed control of the party at a Columbus two day convention. He urged postponing voting until after the November 3 general election to avoid a split, as twelve candidates sought the nomination. The platform backed tax reform, education funding, offshore Lake Erie drilling ban, environment rights, and stronger law enforcement. A platform amendment to share city income tax with suburbs was defeated.

Rioting erupts at East Los Angeles antiwar rally

About 7 000 demonstrators gathered in East Los Angeles for a Mexican American antiwar rally. Rioters burned buildings and smashed windows while police and sheriff deputies used tear gas. Initial reports of two deaths were retracted and 64 arrests reported with more than two dozen injuries.

Amid a National Chicano Moratorium rally in East Los Angeles, clashes erupted near Whittier Boulevard as youths looted a liquor store and a gasoline station was torched. Police and deputies cleared the park and formed riot columns while tear gas filled the streets.

Lorain County Fair ends with demolition derby

The 115th Lorain County Fair will close today with a 9 am church service in the grandstand, an 11 am Central Ohio Saddle Club show, and a 7 pm Stoney Roberts demolition derby. Over 100000 people had visited by mid afternoon, matching 1969 attendance records as Pat Boone drew crowds last night.

Attack on temple kills 15 in Vietnam assault

Viet Cong North Vietnamese troops attacked a Buddhist orphanage and temple near Danang killing 15 and wounding 4. The complex was shelled with mortar fire followed by ground assault as part of a wider wave of Viet Cong attacks across South Vietnam.
