Arson-for-hire ring exposed in Tampa insurance fraud
Senate investigations heard how an elderly blind Tampa woman was pressured to sell her home by a realtor and buyer linked to an arson empire. After selling for 50 dollars, the pair obtained 38 000 dollars in insurance and burned the house once to claim 17 000 dollars, then a second fire on Easter Monday 1974 yielded 27 000 dollars. Insurance adjutors and a Philadelphia arsonist testified about the scheme and other ring participants, including a federal prisoner serving time for conspiracy.
