Cardinals gather in St. Peter's apse Vatican City for a special mass before the conclave to elect a new pope. French Cardinal Jean Villot presided at the main altar as Papal Chamberlain.
President Carter flew to Upper Yellowstone Lake to trout fish while battling a Senate revolt over his natural gas proposal. He planned to canoe for cutthroat trout and visit Old Faithful, then return to Brinkerhoff Lodge in the Grand Tetons. Rosalynn joined him as Secret Service kept watch on the lake.
In Baguio, Karpov defeated Viktor Korchnoi in 39 moves to take a commanding 4-1 lead in the series. The 27 year old Soviet champion now needs six wins to capture the title and a $350000 first prize. Korchnoi threatened violence over alleged hypnosis before the game.
The College of Cardinals elected Italian Cardinal Albino Luciani as the 263rd pope after multiple smoke signals signaled the inconclusive votes. Reports note the conclave proceedings, the strict secrecy rules, and early speculation on likely candidates while officials described smoke colors indicating status.

A man wearing a wig and false beard staged a hijack hoax aboard a TWA Boeing 707 from New York to Geneva, detaining 88 people for eight hours. He demanded release of Sirhan Sirhan and Rudolf Hess. Police found a wig and other items. no bombs were found and the hijacker left with the passengers after evacuations.
Coast Guard search along the southeast Alaska coast found six bodies after a Grumman Goose crash about 30 miles east of Petersburg on Prince of Wales Island. Eleven aboard were listed on the flight plan. one body recovered later, no survivors confirmed. Weather mild with patchy fog hindered operations as wreckage was spotted by the fishing vessel Umimak.
The forecast calls for cloudy mild conditions with highs near 80 today and Sunday, lows around 60, and a 10 percent chance of precipitation today and tonight, rising to 20 percent Sunday.
