Grafton Township Forms Fire Department at Belden HQ
BELDEN The newly organized volunteer fire department of Grafton Township with headquarters at Belden is making progress. Ray Taylor is fire chief and meets with 20 volunteers at the former Lehman Schaefer garage every Monday evening. They are remodeling the garage to house equipment and the former grease pit is being converted into a 2000 gallon cistern. The siren is being installed by volunteers. The department’s first call was to a five acre hay fire at Hitchcock farm, extinguished in about 29 minutes using 200 gallons of water. Previously Grafton Township relied on Valley City for protection and the new department supports Civil Defense preparedness.
