Private Enterprise Ends Jersey Homesteads Cooperative Hope
A long running federal cooperative project at Jersey Homesteads failed to become self sustaining. Opened in 1936 with 4 000 00 spent, the community intended 200 subsistence families on 1 200 acres and housed a factory for New York garment workers. The factory is leased to New York manufacturers, and as of 1939 the plant closed with 125 families remaining. Economic losses will fall to U S taxpayers as government programs are questioned.
