Methodist Church Damaged in Bryden Fire in Columbus

A blaze at the first Methodist church on Bryden in Columbus caused interior damage estimated at 35000 dollars. Fire started in the furnace room and was spotted by Dr. F. J. McIntosh the pastor and Boy Scout members meeting in the basement. The organ altar stained glass and furnishings were destroyed.

Tractor overturns kill farmer near Van Wert

A tractor overturned in an eight foot ditch near Van Wert Ohio yesterday. Claude C. Stuber aged 48 was pinned in eighteen inches of water and died from injuries. He leaves a wife and seven children. a native of Putnam County.

Nazi Bombers Lead Thrusts In Norway

German bombing planes renewed thrusts up the Gudbrandsdal and Oester valleys toward Trondheim as Allied forces battled back in the Otta and Roeros sectors. Woman Hit By Car Suffers Minor Injuries

Chinese Gunmen Bomb American Owned Newspaper

In Shanghai on April 27 Chinese gunmen bombed the American owned Shankha Evening Post injuring three pressmen and killing a Chinese pedestrian in a stolen taxicab. A French Indo-Chinese policeman was shot dead and White Russian police fired at the fleeing cab, wounding three pedestrians. The paper’s editor charged the attackers were operatives of a Japanese puppet regime in Nanking ordered to wreck the paper for its anti puppet stance.

Promenade Sunday Held In Elyria With Auto Parade

Germany accuses Allies of planning invasion of Norway

Berlin charges Britain and France long planned to occupy Norway and that Norwegian officials aided the effort. Ribbentrop says British troops were en route when Germany landed April 9 and promises documents to prove the Allied scheme and Norway’s alleged neutrality stance.

County and City Clash Over Bridge Lighting Costs

Lorain and county officials debated who should pay for lighting the new 21st street bridge. The 17 main span lights cost about 850 annually, with Lorain to cover the lighting on approaches. Grange Master Denounces Ohio Reapportionment Plan

State Grange Master Walter F. Kirk condemned the proposed reapportionment amendment to the Ohio Constitution. He warned it would centralize control in big city politicians, erode county representation and threaten home owner interests, leaving suburban areas defenseless and shifting power to Cleveland and other large cities.

Plan Meeting Of Officials To Study Needs

County commissioners plan a conference with other officials next week to discuss financing relief work. Deputy Auditor C A Horn says about 27000 may come from the road and bridge fund but must be repaid within a year if borrowed. Rel relief bills total 15000 with more expected. 125000 projected to be needed for the year. Three funding options suggested: one mill levy, borrowing from the road fund, or issuing notes against delinquent taxes. Davidson opposes notes. British Troops Repel German Attack in Norway Front

London reports British forces repelled a German assault at Kvam in Gudbrands Valley, suffering heavy losses before withdrawing to cover. Medals Awarded For Heroic Acts

Two year old Chicago housewife Mrs. Yolsada G. Fabri received a bronze medal from the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission for rescuing a man and his baby daughter from Lake Michigan. Fabri swam out, wrested the child away, then towed the man to the wall after he jumped a second time. A lifeguard later pulled the man from the water.

Wednesday Afternoon Closing Restarted This Year

Elyria Chamber of Commerce announces merchant division will begin Wednesday afternoon closing on June fifth. The practice continues through August with stores closing all day Thursday during the Fourth of July week, creating a lighter midweek schedule in the summer.
