Elyria Town Hall History and Auditorium Redevelopment

The old town hall auditorium was abandoned and space repurposed for municipal offices as Elyria grew. The first floor became a waiting room for the Cleveland Southwestern Railway until 1931 when the railway ceased operations. Part of the floor housed a bus waiting area and the National Reemployment Service, while the Elyria Township board kept a room with outside access. A cigar store and news stand occupied a north side store room until remodeling. Charles Lord notes Elyria’s city hall as the sole town hall. The former site had the "old yellow school house" replaced by a brick school after relocation to Fourth Street.
