The Little Woman Child Beating Study Debate

A nationwide study traces high levels of child beating to acceptance of physical force in child rearing. Dr. David Gil of Brandeis analyzes 13,000 reports across all states, arguing abuse stems from the idea that force modifies behavior rather than mental illness. Cultural taboos, like those among American Indians, correlate with lower abuse, likely due to discipline by example. Abuse concentrates in large, low socio economic, less educated families with under reporting in prosperous homes. Abusers are often immature and expect infants to meet all needs without expressing them.
