Jail Birdhouse Project Gives Hopeful Work To Inmate
In Lorain County Jail a 43 year old inmate known as Henry runs a self funded birdhouse program from the basement workshop. He crafts a variety of houses from scrap wood for nuthatches woodpeckers and other birds, selling them to visitors and local taverns. Sheriff Vernon M Smyth views it as a morale boosting effort though it remains a patchwork rehabilitation measure. Henry began as a maintenance helper and was later moved to birdhouse production with $40 donated for materials. His output includes about 30 birdhouses and proceeds support his needs while awaiting release.

A 57 year old Lorain man Edward Hamilton Jr was struck and killed as he stepped from behind a parked pickup into the path of a car on Stang Road Amherst Township The driver Blaine Lacock 16 of 231 Main St Amherst was traveling west at about 60 mph when Hamilton crossed from behind the truck near West Ridge Road No charges were filed Moskal said the man had been helping his son move straw to a farm at 630 Stang Rd and the pair had been behind the truck moments before the collision The day was mostly sunny and cool with highs near 40 to 50 miles per hour.
