Saigon reports the last American troops depart the Khe Sanh Marine base near the Laotian frontier after a final evacuation. The retreat ends a 1968 siege era. the convoy carries 300 men, Jeeps, trucks, and armored vehicles, reaching Quang Tri without incident as North Vietnamese pressure persists elsewhere.
Sheffield fire crews battled smoke and flames from a boxcar of potatoes along the Norfolk and Western route. The car rolled to a siding, insulation burned and top layer of potatoes blackened. Firefighters twice returned as smoldering resumed hours later. Cause blamed on boxcar air circulation system. Damage estimated as slight overall.
