Congress Puts Housing Bill on Truman's Desk
Washington July 9 AP President Truman needs only to sign to seal the administration's first big victory in the 81st Congress. Final action put the long-range public housing bill on his desk after voice votes in both chambers. The measure authorizes 810,000 public housing units over six years, with 50,000 planned in the first year. The bill also funds slum clearance, farm dwellings, and housing research with federal loans and grants, most costs offset locally. The Senate also moved to sustain private housing construction with RFC funds for mortgage purchases. The House banking committee will hold hearings on a similar bill Monday.
