Free Summer Concerts Open On Wednesday

A nine concert series begins Wednesday night under the American Federation of Musicians and Canton Musicians with the Thayer Military Band the American Legion Band and the Nazir Grotto Band. Each ensemble performs at Moonlight Gardens Meyers Lake Molly Stark Sanitarium and Massillon State Hospital with the 40 piece Thayer Band opening at Moonlight Gardens directed by William E Strassner. The Legion Band directed by Walter Achauer follows at Moonlight Gardens Wednesday.

Market avenue widening to begin in Canton delays traffic

Workmen of Garaux Bros Construction Co will widen Market between 9th and 12th streets starting Monday, with resurfacing to follow up to 19th. Two other projects on Public Square and Tuscarawas Street West begin this fall. Trees must be removed and traffic detours enforced. North and southbound routes reroute via Cleveland Avenue Northwest. City shares costs 50 50 with state. Ohio Power will install new street lights after widening.

Indicted 14 in Alabama for hooded mob violence

A Jefferson County grand jury charged 14 individuals in the Birmingham area with taking part in hooded mob violence. The session handed 44 indictments for flogging and mob acts, with three dozen counts accusing acts of violence. Judge Wheeler praised the jury and stressed law over vigilante action.

American Held 3 Days In Shanghai

U S Vice Consul William M Olive, held three days in a Shanghai jail after a mass parade incident, says he was beaten. Consul General Cabot reports Olive was brutally struck, handcuffed, and forced to sign statements. State Department protests accompanied his release and medical exams confirmed injuries.

Russians Block Berlinbound Trucks In Latest Blockade

FRANKFURT Germany July 9 AP six Soviet zone border crossings were closed to loaded Berlin bound trucks in what is described as a new Russian blockade. Most vehicles carried fruit and vegetables and were turned back at several border points while some crossings remained open for empty trucks. A clash yesterday between American and Russian patrols reportedly left a Russian soldier dead.
