Rescuers Delay as Mine Fire Worsens in Illinois Shaft

Firefighters lower into the shaft reported flames about 100 feet from the bottom and soon all exploration stopped. Officials say it may be several days before any rescue attempt resumes. The plan includes forcing carbon dioxide and steam to the bottom, prompting United Mine Workers president McDonald to warn of rapid death if used.
