Kennedy Will Leaves 825 Million to Churches and Colleges

New York dispatch reports the late John Stewart Kennedy's will leaving more than 825 million to religious charitable and educational institutions nationwide and abroad. Major beneficiaries include Presbyterian bodies, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Public Library, United Charities, and many colleges and schools. The widow's share is about 16 million and employees received gifts from 500 to 2000 each.

Verdict of guilty in Geo Sharrar v The People

Jury at Ithaca found Geo Sharrar guilty as charged after a trial this week. He will appeal to the supreme court through his attorneys. Prosecutor Everden and O G Tuttle represented the state, with Stone and Watson of Ithaca and J G Kress of Ithaca serving Sharrar. Thanksgiving is two weeks away.

Birthday Party for Bell Boys at Home

Invitations issued by Master John and Richard Bell marked a birthday gathering for more than twenty children at Mr and Mrs Bell home last Saturday afternoon from three to five. Richard aged two and John aged four were celebrated with games by Irene Peasly and Nics Martin assisted in entertaining. Lanterns and two birthday cakes decorated the tables as paper care were used as souvenirs and the young guests enjoyed the event.

Five Farmers' Institutes Planned in Gratiot County

Five one day farmers institutes will be held in Gratiot County this fall at Ashley Ithaca Sumner Breckenridge Forest Hill on specific dates. Prof W F Raven of Michigan Agricultural College will speak on diverse topics including soil conservation beans corn crops potatoes silage dairying roads and farmer son education with local managers to be announced later.

Shloon Lease Ends in Supreme Court Decision

Hooper and Galvin of Owosso sue Muller Bros for eight years rent on the Edwarde house building, sublet to a saloonist. The supreme court affirms the circuit court, ruling the lease ended when the county became dry, canceling rent obligations.

Ten Year Old Bernard Wright Dies After Lingering Illness

The ten year old son of Mr and Mrs John Wright Bernard Wright died Saturday after a long throat trouble dating from last March. The community mourns a boy known for his rare qualities and loving disposition. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 40 pm from the Wright Avenue residence conducted by Rev H L Crain with prayers by Rev Jay Clizha. Music was provided by Miss Havel Bablke and Miss Leora Johnstone who sang Sometime we'll understand and Abide with me.

Auction success for W. J. Byard sale on Record ads

The sale conducted Wednesday by auctioneer 5. D. Parks netted significant results. W. J. Byard estimated $500 in proceeds from advertised articles while A. R. Baldwin anticipated $8000. The Record’s advertising and the auction effort led to a $45 gain, prompting Mr Byard and family to plan a move to Hurt Arkansas.

The Kings Workers of the M. E. church schedule a New England social for Friday evening November 1 at the home of Mr L Delavan. Prices are 25 cents per couple or 15 cents for a single. Proceeds go toward a church payment.

Alma High Stages Tight Showdown With Owosso High

Alma High School battled Owosso High on their home field with a hard 0–0 final as Kress kicked a late field goal for Alma but a controversial onside call favored Owosso. Weaver directed plays while Clark nearly scored on a reverse turnover. Next week Alma ends season at Fenton with capt Wood and the Barry brothers ready.

State Reward Roads Progress Report and Costs

State Highway Commissioner Ely reports since July about 100 miles of reward roads accepted with nearly 7 more miles in file. Eight counties in the upper peninsula pursue reward roads, with northern lower peninsula counties also showing interest. Sixty percent of built roads are stone or macadam, the rest gravel, with rewards of 1000 dollars per mile for stone and 500 for gravel. Inspections occur during and after construction. many roads exceed state standards. Estimated gravel road cost 800 to 1400 per mile, stone or macadam 4000 to 4000 per mile depending on conditions.

Wireless telephone brake system tested by Erie railroad

Erie railroad tested a wireless telephone device by Fred Lacroix that links to a third rail and automatically applies air brakes within two miles of danger. In a test between Newark and South Paterson the train slowed from about 85 mph to a stop with no jar, as the engineer could set brake application. A public test is planned November 10 with two engines racing from opposite directions to demonstrate collision prevention.

Dairy route driver admits shortage and is jailed

Charles Hatch began work September 27 on Windsor dairy farm and was found $17.75 short in his milk route accounts. He was sent to Ithaca for thirty days. The shortage later grew to about $8. The driver disappeared on November 10 and was found in Bay City and Morenci before being brought back. He is serving time in the county jail.

Died at Home of Her Son Mrs Banghart Passes Away

Mrs M M Banghart died Sunday morning at her son P T Banghart’s home in this city. She was 84 years old and had lived in Washtenaw county for years and was a longtime member of the Methodist church in Ann Arbor. Funeral services were held at the home of her daughter Mrs Elliott in Ann Arbor and burial followed at Forest Hill cemetery with Rev Arthur Starks officiating.

Rainbow Bazaar at Presbyterian church

The Ladies' Aid society will hold a Rainbow Bazaar in church parlors starting Tuesday afternoon Nov 18 and closing Friday evening Nov 10 with a chicken pie supper. Useful and novel articles for Christmas gifts will be sold. An entertainment is planned and the date for the supper is Friday evening Nov 19.

Forty Ninth Michigan Sunday School Convention in Saginaw

The forty ninth annual Michigan State Sunday School convention will be held in Saginaw with meetings in the new auditorium November 17 18 and 19. Delegates from counties may nominate to the committee and arrange free entertainment lodging and meals for registered delegates. Registration is one dollar for free entertainment. Tickets sold November 16 and 17 return by November 20 with reduced passage for Michigan Newspaper Association members.

Breckenridge Couple Married at Michigan Soldiers Home

William Watson of Breckenridge and Lena W. Goll of Lake City Michigan were married at 6 o clock Tuesday evening by Rev A Watson Brown in the Woman's Building apartments at the Michigan Soldiers home. The groom is the brother of Men Brown and uncle of the officiating clergyman. The couple will reside in Breckenridge and are regarded highly by their acquaintances.

Wrights announces a ten day display of 700 moulding samples for public viewing. The display invites patrons to inspect the new patterns and features a Cameron car shown in the exhibit area.

Memorial for I W Whitney Opens Court in Gratiot

On Monday court opened in Gratiot County a memorial was read for deceased brother I W Whitney of St Louis born July 29 1846 in Stockbridge Michigan. He served in the Union army and later became a noted railroad lawyer for the Toledo and Ann Arbor line with a long private practice. He practiced in Morley Mecosta County before moving to St Louis and forming law partnerships. He died at Hot Lake Sanitarium Oregon on October 12 after a period of ill health.
