Train blocking fine under new city ordinance
Elmer Tanner of Saginaw was arrested after his Pere Marquette train stood on a crossing over five minutes. He pled guilty, paid a $5 fine and $3.75 costs, and the case was continued for a few days for collection. Obituary notices follow with details of Carl Albin Gustafson born in Sweden July 12, 1887. He died July 13 after tuberculosis of the throat. He leaves a wife, one child, six sisters, a brother in France. The Gratiot county draft board reports no more releases for draftees pending further action.

Sunday School Convention to Unfold At Riverdale
Delegates at the county Sunday School convention in Riverdale August 17 and 18 will enjoy special music as a 100-voice chorus rehearses. Sir Skinner, county secretary, presided over the first practice at the Riverdale church and invites singers from miles around to attend next Sunday at 22:00 for the second session. Two Red Cross benefit events drew large crowds and raised funds for soldier care. At the Artists' Red Cross concert in the high school under Mrs. Peet, over six hundred tickets sold netting about 300 dollars with performances by William P. Carlton, Miss Amsbury, Miss Alexander, the Poet brothers, G V Wright, the Wright Quartette, and Master Greene. The lawn fete at the Ruggles home featured electric lights, dancing, refreshment stands, and Red Cross nurse volunteers selling items, drawing hundreds and yielding a substantial sum.
