List of Twenty Ons Publicizing Draft Registrants

A long list of Gratiot county men called for the July draft. Sixty four sons will depart July 25 for Camp Custer to begin training. The official list, corrected from prior errors, names registrants in order of liability, with many Alma, St. Louis, Perrinton, Ashley, and Wheeler entries and numerous given names. The Record urges reporting any man turning 21 by June 6 not on the list.

Alma Welcomes the Jackies with Open Hearts

Merchants and residents of Alma opened their doors Monday and Tuesday to the Jackies, making their visit memorable. The Texaco Candy Company hosted the group and J. W. Blakely along with others contributed to expenses, as the community rallied to support the visit.

Red Cross Lawn Fete At Ruggles Home Alma

A big Red Cross benefit lawn fete is planned for July 24 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F W Ruggles on Michigan Avenue Alma. The Republic employees will manage activities including dancing on a lawn platform and in the ballroom. Refreshment stands, games, and a flower selling nurse service will support the event with Saxophone Orchestra donating music and the grounds lit by hundreds of lights.

Local clothing merchant Goodes sells stock to Tauber Co

Fred Goodes, Alma clothing merchant, sold his stock to Tauber Company of Chicago and closed his store last week. The shop will become the J Penney Co Alma store, moving goods to Chicago for sale. Goodes may remain in the city and had led the business as Goodes The Clothier after purchasing his partner’s interests three years ago.

Alma company fills Michigan State Troops ranks

The Alma Michigan State Troops company has been completed with sixty enlisted men and ten reserves, three commissioned officers led by Captain Geo Soper. The roster lists many names, while Carl A Gustafson, a 31 year old former public timer at Re public Motor Truck, died after a long illness and was buried in Riversine cemetery with services at the Baptist church. He left his wife Adaline and parents Charles and ???.

Artists' Concert as Red Cross Benefit at Alma High School

A July 28 Alma High School gym concert features baritone William Carlton New York City pianist Meo Amsbury Chicago and soprano Dora Alexander Tutraque plus other talent to aid the Red Cross. Ticket sales led by Red Cross ladies under D. Peet aim to support wartime humanitarian work. Also reports Ringling Bros circus arrival from Saginaw and city crowds gathering for the parade.

Alma College Assembly Promises Week of Lectures

Alma college opens a seven day assembly directed by Rev W B Shirley and Rev W McKnight with a strong program for Sabbath school workers and the business community. Speakers include Dr S Hall Young Rev J M Barkley Dr James W Barkley and President H M Crooks among others. Morning and evening sessions will feature lectures on Sabbath school work and related topics.

Official Call for Michigan Republican State Convention 1918

The Republican State Central Committee calls the Michigan Republican electors to meet at the Armory in Grand Rapids on Thursday September 26 1918 at 11 00 oclock in the forenoon to nominate candidates for state offices and conduct other business. Gratiot County is entitled to fourteen delegates.

Patriotic Naval Demonstration Brightens Alma City

A Monday Alma gathering featured the Detroit Naval Station Jackies in a large enlistment drive. The crowd swelled along State and Superior, as Rev Huffey and Rev J Frank Jackson urged enlistment. Fifty Six men volunteered in under an hour, with more joining later, amid songs and a city parade led by band and Liberty trucks.
