Citizens of Alma flooded streets in joyous display after rumors spread that the Allied armies had captured the crown prince and 480000 troops in France. Bonfires lit, gongs rang, and crowds paraded for hours though later reports offered no confirmation.
Miss Edna Macomber and Mr. Ralph B. Wagner, both of Alma, were married in a quiet ceremony at the Episcopal church with Rev. J. Frank Jackson officiating. Only a few intimates attended, and the couple departed by auto to catch a train for a two weeks wedding trip to Lake Orin, Detroit, Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids.
The Gratiot county draft board called forty six men for physical examination at their Alma offices on Friday. Most are twenty one, and the list includes names such as Harry Ashley Hutton Walter Mower and many others. The article also notes the broader draft process and related local items.
The Republic baseball team defeated Elm Hall 14 to 4 on home ground. Faulkner pitched well for the Republics while LaVoil homered for the visitors. Elm Hall’s Johnson and LaVoil provided the notable moments.

A large Alma turnout honored draft age local youths who volunteered for the army for the duration of the war. Speakers Col Mackwn and AH Arnham addressed the crowd as guards and troops stood at attention. Dances followed at Alma High School gym, with several names listed among the enlisting and departing.
A new Gratiot County organization aims to unite business men from St. Laurela and Alma with the Republic area to foster closer ties and host recreational activities for members and their wives. A kickoff meeting set up a club to be called Gratiot County Club with a governing board and membership open to county businesses. About 160 signed up. The Union delivery system plans a single daily route to conserve manpower during the war, dividing city coverage between morning and afternoon shifts.
M Ray Kimball, commercial instructor at Alma public schools for two years, will not return next year. He accepted a higher paying job in the accounting department at Republic Motor Truck Company’s plant. He co led football and track with solid results and many student friends regret his departure. Officials doubt a male replacement will be found soon, with a woman likely to fill the vacancy.
