Allied demands and American output boosted by meal priorities. The United States supplied large meat fats and other foodstuffs to Allies, with figures showing substantial year to year gains in 1917 18 and total shipments reaching hundreds of millions of pounds.
Food Administrator Hoover reports the United States shipped over 141 million bushels of wheat and 844 million pounds of meat to Allies and American forces in the year ending June 30. He cites voluntary conservation, rising production, and broad national cooperation as the key factors behind these wartime food shipments and the overall $1.4 billion value of meats purchased with Food Administration help.
Iberian states Spain and Portugal face sugar shortages as cane crops fail in Europe and transport limits restrict stock movement. Barcelona sells brown sugar at about 19 cents per pound while Lisbon fixes beet sugar at 1.06 to 1.12 dollars per pound, higher than Swedish beet sugar at 14 cents per pound.
