After a delay a portion of equipment for Company 87 Infantry Michigan State Troops arrived and was issued at drill. About fifty uniforms sufficient for all, some dozens of regulation army hats and hat cords for enlisted and officers, shirts for entire company, and bugler models received. Extensive Repairs Made at Church in Past Month
The Methodist Episcopal church interiors underwent extensive repairs during hot weather adjournment, costing around 2500 dollars. Near to drown at Bass Lake rescue by fellow worker
Miss Mildred Cuthbert, an employee of Republic Motor Truck, nearly drowned at Bass Lake on Sunday while swimming with friends. Unable to swim, she went beyond her depth and plunged under. Earl Parker of Home Lumber & Fuel, present at the lake, pulled her to shore and she was revived.

New Purity Brand plant to start Friday in Alma
A new Purity Brand Milk Co plant on Walnut Street in Alma will begin active operations Friday. The plant will pasteurize milk, produce ice cream, cottage cheese, butter milk and butter, with bottling and cleaning equipment installed. Albert M. Begeman will manage the Alma plant. State inspectors from the Food and Drug department will inspect food handles and milk samples, with ten samples already sent to Lansing and more to follow. Some milk samples reportedly show sky blue content, suggesting substandard milks sold for twelve cents a quart. Ten Alma locations are ordered to clean up within ten days, or face arrest. The inspectors will remain until the job is done.

Park Beautification Under Way Wright Park Upgrades
The city park board has begun beautifying Wright park this summer adding flower boxes at entrances a central flower bed more swings and other devices. Gratiot County fair organizers plan a five day event starting August 27 with a highlighted Red Cross auction sale. Farmers and merchants donate sheep and hogs for auction to raise funds for the Red Cross. Races, Ferris Wheel Girls, Delta Mead Troupe, Galarme Sisters, and other acts promise entertainment. Alma mourns Clifford McLean sixteen, the town’s first WWI casualty, killed July 20 in France after enlisting January 24. Injured Ithach Man Hit By Oncoming Train At Elwell Crossing
Calvin Pratt, 72, of Ithach, was severely hurt Monday afternoon when a Pere Marquette freight train struck the truck he was riding in near Elwell. His companion escaped. Pratt was unconscious with scalp and facial wounds and shoulder injuries. He was rushed to Alma hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.
