Alma voters will decide on a revised city charter crafted by the charter commission after extensive study of other charters. The 133 pages cover 39 chapters from city powers to elections, finance, ordinances, and administration with provisions for a mayoral term of two years and four at large commissioners for four years.
President N M Crooks of Alma College anticipates strong overall attendance despite wartime disruptions. He notes upperclassmen losses to service, expects a large freshman class, and estimates about one third of enrollees will be male, with many prospects unsettled by draft law. The college relies on field agents’ reports to gauge interest.
At a meeting of Gratiot County club board of governors in C. G. Rhodes's Republic plant offices, officers for the new country club were elected. President H. M. Crooks. vice presidents W. G. West and Markle. treasurer W. G. Rath. secretary C. J. Darragh. A second floor Merchants' block lease on State street for a club room was approved, with plans for improvement. Attendees included C. G. Rhodes, Rev. J. Frank Jackson, H. H. Soule, J. J. McCormick, Mr. Graham, Fred Bernard, and Francis King.
Treva Franklin and Efe Marvin, detained last week and examined by health officials, were freed in error while in Ithaca Michigan. State officials failed to locate them as Sheriff Vibber and Deputy Wheeler investigated. County clerk B L Case allegedly caused the liberty by an administrative mistake and the girls remain at risk of re detention pending health authority action.
A sixteen year old Alma lad gave the supreme sacrifice for his country in battle. He died serving with courage and loyalty, leaving grief to family and community while his name is honored in local ceremonies and memorials.
Alma residents mourn as Lieut. Charles Dutt is severely wounded on the French front after serving since spring. William McLean, a relative, is reported dead on July 20 after serving in Europe. A letter from Melean is published in this issue, detailing his sacrifice for country and humanity.
The Republic baseball team suffered a decisive defeat Sunday as Torbensen Axle of Cleveland dominated from start to finish scoring 11 runs while Republic could not muster key hits. The Buckeye nine clouted the ball to all corners and kept the Republic bats at bay throughout the game.
The Tuesday papers list 706 names on the United States roll of honor, including Breckenridge Sergeant Howard C. Wolverton. Wolverton is the first Gratiot county man to die on the firing line in France. He formerly worked for Republic Motor Truck Company and enlisted about a year ago in the cavalry, with early service at Fort Ethan Allen Vermont.
The Redpath Chautauqua comes to Alma from Monday, Aug 12, through the following week with a top rated program. Nationally known lecturers will discuss war and war work, and ticket sales by the Red Cross ladies are progressing well to fulfill the contract and aid the Red Cross war relief efforts.
The central recruiting office of the United States army at Grand Rapids reports the enlistment of seven Alma boys during July. Enlistees are Howard J. Walker Merlin L. Richards Verne Welch Thomas W. Deyarmond Morris Ro Aldrich Arthur J. Dumas and Horace E. Cummings. Three enlisted last week and left Wednesday for final examination before entering service.
Special meeting of Republic's board of directors was held in Cleveland on Tuesday to review governance updates and approve committee assignments.
A Cleveland meeting expanded Republic Motor Truck Company from eight to thirteen directors. New appointees include James H. Foster of Hydraulic Pressed Steel, Robert Barr, A Harris Ido, Henry J. Grown, and Albert Rothbart. Existing directors listed, with a joint Alma visit by the group to inspect plants and tour Alma facilities. The city council later approved Central Michigan Light & Power’s five year water pumping contract.
Alma records show Tuesday reached 103 degrees in the shade the hottest since 1881 with scorching breezes and no cool spots citywide. A dry spell of nearly three weeks worsens crop damage until rain comes. Roy Perry, former Alma Record employee and local high school graduate, suffered a battle ship accident into a hole breaking his right arm and left leg.
Alma College plans military training under the Students Army Training Corps with War Department guidance. Eligible students eighteen or older will enlist, wear uniforms, receive no pay, and be on furlough status while remaining in college. Training includes a six week camp with private pay, possible continued college enrollment, and later classification as I D.
Mayor Franeie King cast the deciding vote on a proposition before the council this week. The item involved rescinding a motion to hire a competent social worker with school board half cost, city paying the rest. The vote tied, and King’s ballot broke the tie, enabling the hire for addressing health matters, with Mr. and Mrs. Burton Young planning a Crystal Lake vacation.
A fast moving blaze Tuesday endangered Isabella Village as flames ripped through the Shepherd area. Fire crews battled the blaze, with residents evacuated and property damage feared. Authorities investigated the cause as winds aided the spread.
A major fire in Shepherd threatened the village Tuesday prompting Alma and Mt Pleasant fire departments to rush to the scene. The blaze started at the Dibble Kent warehouse and spread to homes including Mrs Lyons and Ralph Armstrong, who was badly burned. Sparks set several buildings ablaze as a west wind pushed flames toward the business district, with bucket brigades forming as crews fought the fire and a water supply dwindled before aid arrived. The loss is expected to reach thousands with extensive damage to the warehouse and nearby properties.
Oscar Vibber submits July police report to city council noting ten arrests, seven under jetty ordinances and three under state law, all fines paid. The report highlights 27 children picked up after 9 PM curfew, first month of the ordinance, showing how it works. Also notes War Pledge payments urged for local YMCA relief efforts and solicitations seeking unpaid pledges at the First State Bank.
The Twin Cities Mealty company announces continued operations after an earlier error. Mr. Sullivan and Mr. Bansill will keep business active. Barnill will run an office from home and Sullivan will be temporarily located at Pollasky Whaek. Victory bread ad text included.
