King System ventilation for livestock barns described
An 1889 Wisconsin University professor introduced the King System, a dual-flue ventilation method for barns. Fresh air enters via exterior wall vents, foul air exits through side flues rising to a central chimney, with adjustable resistors to suit conditions. The university dairy barn, 40 by 72 feet, uses nonconductive walls and a central 40 inch diameter flue rising 60 feet, with openings near the floor to remove CO2 and humid air while regulating winter warmth. The system, shown in figures, has been effective for 11 years in the university barn and other stables.
