Samuel Vandecarr Dies Veteran of Civil War at 61

Samuel Vandecarr died after several weeks illness at age 61. He served three years with the Fifth Michigan Cavalry and was wounded three times at Gettysburg before discharge. He moved to Arcade township in Gratiot County 16 years ago and lived on a farm until death. He was a member of F and A M with funeral services conducted by Masons. His wife Mrs Vandecarr had died years earlier. Surviving children include five, oldest 13 and youngest 7.

Theo Smith Dead at Three in Downie Street Home

Theo Smith aged three years five months and six days died last Thursday at his parents' Downie street residence after a illness list including tonsillitis. Heart failure was given as the immediate cause by the attending physicians. Funeral services were Friday at the family home by Rev. J. M. Wolfe and Rev. Hubert Elder with burial at Riverside cemetery. The grieving parents had also buried their two year old son Willard last Thursday and now Theo, making ten days of sorrow for the family.

Relatives and friends gathered near the city to extend congratulations to the esteemed couple in a festal meeting that day. Prosperous Addition Shown in Pine River Telephone Report

The Pine River Telephone association held its annual meeting at Forest Hill last Monday. Officers elected were James Kirby president C F Johnson secretary S B Frigby treasurer and E W Lake manager. The system operates seven lines with 140 telephones and a total expense per telephone of 3.26 dollars. Plans for a larger switchboard and continuous service were discussed and a follow up meeting was set for April 1 to decide on definite actions.

County Board Resolutions Authorize Legal Action Over Tax Funds

The Gratiot county board resolves to have prosecuting attorneys investigate the county treasurer for depositing public moneys in banks and to pursue penalties. They may sue to recover interest and damages and to challenge the validity of the act requiring deposits. Attorneys may also sue to enforce payment of orders if funds are unlawfully tied to drain fund misuses, per the board’s belief of unlawful conversion.
