Ogallala Indians rally late in the third quarter to tie Sidney Maroons at seven after a 58 yard drive led by Gaston. The Maroons, missing Dele Kinney to an ankle injury, held the early lead but could not seal the win as both teams traded possessions and strong defensive stands. Sidney faces Bridgeport next while Ogallala strengthens a South Platte Valley title claim with a solid conference performance.
Pat Heaton passed for three touchdowns and Gene Durbin plus Bob Kennedy triggered the St. Pat’s Irish in a 42 to 0 victory over Peetz High on Friday. The Irish scored in every quarter, capitalized on Peetz fumbles, and built an early 10 to 0 lead ending the first period with a safety and two points. Durbin added a 40 yard TD run, Acker hauled in two scoring passes, and Kallhoff joined the parade with a 40 yard score, completing the rout as Heaton connected with Acker for another late 30 yard strike.
The Maroon football reserves at Sidney ready for their opener against Kimball reserves on October 1. Coach Ray Maley leads a 23 man squad with several veterans and many promising newcomers. The schedule includes home and away games against Sterling and Oshkosh through late October and early November.
Secretary Paul Gilbert of the state game commission says hunt turnout will be high as nonresident bans push hunters toward Nebraska. Farmers are largely receptive to permit-based hunting with 99 percent willing to open grounds, though some misbelieve licenses grant universal access.
The season will be sharply restricted and nonresidents face a two-bird limit during the Oct 18 27 ten day hunt. Two stamps must be attached to licenses and signed. Gilbert, back from a statewide trip, notes many farmers burning brush and cutting hedges.
Nebraska business activity stays well above the national level as agriculture recovers. Dr. Edgar Z. Palmer, bureau director, notes four distinct steps in the Nebraska index showing price and production gains since the mid-1930s lows. The ascent is described as moving upward like a ladder.
The Nebraska index shows four distinct phases from 1935 to mid-1946. National growth outpaced Nebraska during 1940 43 as U S war involvement remained Europe focused. Nebraska surged by 1944, then agriculture prosperity lifted the state above the nation postwar. The U S peak occurred June 1946 while Nebraska peaked in August 1946, with national figures resuming rise from December 1946 while Nebraska plateaued.
