Land Office Discusses Residency Rules and Costs for Yuma Project
The entryman must live on the unit for three years with a habitable dwelling and may substitute military service for residence in years two and three. Construction charges vary from 76 to 85 dollars per acre, repayable interest-free over 20 to 30 years. Total annual charge for construction, operation, and maintenance averages about 950 dollars per acre. Much land is under cultivation and leased from the Bureau of Reclamation, with leases expiring next December 31 allowing certain improvements. The Yuma Project, authorized in 1904 and substantially completed in 1911, now under cultivation covers 55,000 acres, mostly in private ownership.

Beet Harvest Labor Shortage Warns of Shortfall in County
State Farm Supervisor L. F. Snipes and county agents from the panhandle met in Sidney to tackle the beet harvest labor shortage. Cheyenne County faces a deficit of about half to two thirds of needed workers for the fall crop. Mexican Nationals will be allocated per a formula based on total beet acres minus machine harvestable, family labor, and expected Texas Mexican work.

Labor Shortage Shapes Harvest Plan For 1940 Texas Crops
The article notes unpredictable weather and uncertain numbers of Texas Nationals for Sugar Company labor. Only 45 workers will move to the county for the fall beet, bean, and potato harvest, expected around September 25. Local officials must allocate scarce help to prioritize potatoes, making simultaneous beet and potato work unlikely. Potatoes may not fill all contracts due to labor limits.
