Whooping Cranes Sighted at Lake McConaughy Ogallala
Conservation Officer Loren Bunney spotted two giant cranes at the head of Lake McConaughy near Ogallala. Only 33 of these nearly extinct birds are known to exist, and the two sighted are likely members of that group. The birds stand about 4 1/2 feet tall and can reach nearly six feet when stretched. They fly high and are usually invisible from the ground. The cranes were featured in Collier’s September piece “Return of Our Soaring Giants.”
