Major products show price declines in district market report

The Federal Reserve Bank's tenth district review shows declines in prices for several major products with some rises elsewhere. Wheat, hay, flour, coal, refined oils and eggs rose while crude oil, zinc and lead held steady. Corn, oats, mill feeds, cattle, hogs, sheep and poultry fell. Crop estimates drop as September warmth and drought cut production, with the district crop now 23 million bushels below last year. Hay and white potato harvests also fell, while cotton, grain sorghums, broom corn and sugar beets are forecast higher. Seasonal retail trade rose slightly in September, but wholesale trade did not, though dollar sales rose 4.7% from the prior month. Cattle and sheep marketed toward fall did not meet expectations, though sheep marketing was higher than in prior months. More stocker cattle and feeder cattle moved directly from ranges to feedlots under contracts. Meat packing activity in September was below normal except for sheep. Grain receipts were generally light, cement output declined, crude oil production faced restrictions, while coal mine output rose seasonally.
