Cheyenne county welfare board, newly appointed, asks residents to report needy families and residences. Five unpaid members will oversee a countywide checkup, aided by rural teachers and volunteers. A food and clothing drive will solicit donations from employed families, not cash, to avoid burden on county finances.
W Cardinal O Connell and other leaders praise the American Red Cross on its 50th anniversary in a message received by Mrs P L Martin chairing the local roll call. The remarks hail the charity as a nation of mercy and fraternal aid, born on battlefields and active in relief efforts. Meanwhile two would be robbers identified as Frank Snyder and Paul L Coffman are jailed after a failed attempted carjacking on Frazie in the Hardy area. Frazie and bystanders overpowered the suspects before sheriff arrival.
Sidney student Margaret Craig returned from the state wide young citizens contest in Omaha empty handed but clearly enjoyed a busy schedule. She described tests on Thursday luncheon at the stock exchange building dinner at the Fontelle hotel sightseeing Friday and a Brandeis theatre outing before arriving home Saturday noon.
Armistice Day observance in Sidney featured Attorney W P Miles as the principal speaker. He traced World War history and urged preparedness while opposing entangling the United States in the China Japan conflict. He urged readiness to defend rights if the Asian crisis reaches American shores.
American Legion conventions in Nebraska districts will be held earlier this year with the western district meeting in Bridgeport set for December 2. Meetings are scheduled in Cambridge November 30 North Platte December 1 Valentine December 4 St Paul January 4 Columbus January 5 Schuyler January 6 West Point January 7 Herman January 8 Humboldt January 11 Milligan January 12 Minden January 13 Seward January 14.
Sidney high school Maroons crushed Kimball 52 to 0 on Armistice day. Co captain Montgomery scored three touchdowns along with Barnlett one each and Maley and Brewer also crossed the line. Chesebro added four extra points as 24 players used. Masse suffered a dislocated vertebrae but was quickly treated. Sidney remains undefeated against Kimball in nine straight meetings.
The November report from the state and federal division of agricultural statistics shows Nebraska corn averaging 16.5 bushels per acre with an estimated 166 million bushels produced. Yields are uneven, northern and central areas poor, while potatoes average 54 bushels per acre and western wheat tests prove variable amid drought and late rains.
Jacob Whisler, the longest residing centenarian in Sidney history, turned 100 yesterday at his daughter Mrs. D F Bennett's home. Born November 12, 1831 in Circleville Ohio he moved to Nebraska in 1885 and to Sidney in 1908 after his wife died. Relatives friends and local organizations sent flowers as a quiet observance limited by his age.
North Platte and Sidney meet next Friday in a high stakes state prep football showdown. Both teams undefeated this season, Sidney’s two scoreless ties amid the run. Game time 2 pm to suit rail workers, stores urged to close 2 to 4 pm for the big confrontation.
Formal dedication of the new Light Memorial Presbyterian church will be held Sunday, November 15, with services at 11 o'clock and a union service that night featuring pastors from other churches. The brick structure sits at Linden street and 14th avenue in Sidney and follows a June fundraising drive.
Sidney high school announces homecoming for grads on Friday November 20 with the theme When good fellows get together. Alumni, both old and young, will return to their Alma Mater for a big day as Sidney meets North Platte in a local football game. Girls pep club and S club sponsor the event.
Sam Bergman, early homesteader and Sidney businessman, died after a weeklong illness in Cheyenne Wy. He homesteaded in 1886 and later moved to Cheyenne. Funeral held Tuesday, burial in Cheyenne Jewish cemetery. Survived by widow, two sons, one sister, and brother Dan Bergman, a former local merchant. Old timers recall him as a colorful early settler.
A delayed message caused a frantic father hours of worry as Armistice Day nearly led to an unintended adoption. Howard and Sidney Smith, ages four and six, rode an overland train from Los Angeles, reached a station a thousand miles from Rapid City, and met strangers while awaiting their father. The alarm prompted rapid action by an express agent and sheriff's wires. The message eventually confirmed the boys were safe, preventing an accidental family change.
