New Method of Establishing Alfalfa Proves Successful
Lionel Harris reports a new alfalfa and alfalfa grass mix method at Scotts Bluff Experiment Station becoming standard. High yielding corn replaces oats and barley as a companion crop, with corn yields of 100 to 130 bushels per acre during establishment and alfalfa yields of 5 to 7 tons per acre in later years. Water management, soil tests, and broadcasting seed with a fertilizer spreader enabled rapid germination and strong establishment on level and sloped land. Continuous irrigation and contour laterals minimized erosion while delivering water efficiently to the young alfalfa.
