Mostly cloudy conditions continue this afternoon tonight and Saturday with a few showers or thunderstorms. Tonight’s low 35 to 45 degrees and Saturday’s high 65 to 75. Five day outlook calls for temperatures a few degrees below normal through Wednesday with highs around 70 and lows near 40 with occasional showers or storms.
Two Potter residents were bruised when their automobile went off the old highway and overturned about five miles east of Kimball. Driver Heath er K. Christensen, 18, suffered bruises. his mother Sarah had cuts and bruises and was treated in Kimball. The muddy road was under repair. Auto damage estimated at about 100 dollars.
Mrs. Elmer Phelps of Lodgepole won the $800 grand prize in a five week Telegraph readers drive ending at 12 noon May 20. Second place went to Mrs. W. D. Smith of Sidney with $50 for bringing in new subscriptions. third to Mrs. Margaret McCabe of Dalton. fourth to Mrs. Ira Mae Keefer of Sidney. and fifth to Mrs. Lois Dindinger of Potter. A total of 414 new subscribers were added, directed by LuSobotka, who praised workers and public response.
Defense Department plans to replace Minuteman I missiles with Minuteman II across Warren AFB and surrounding complexes. The program adds a fifth 200-missile wing at Warren, upgrades silos and launch centers, and boosts range payload and accuracy with a new second stage engine and a single nozzle.
The Rev. Max Kors performed pallbearer duties at funeral services for Rt. Rev. Howard Brinker a 71 year old Nebraska Episcopal bishop who died Wednesday at his Omaha home. Brinker served 22 years as bishop and was well known in the area.
Dix invites applications for a rural mail carrier with a written test required. Applicants must reside within the office delivery area for one year, be at least 18, no upper age limit except 70+ for temporary one year posts, and apply by June 8 with forms filed to the U.S. Civil Service Commission in Washington, D.C. 20415.
The weekly summer bookmobile travels announced by Sidney Public Library will run from May 31 to August 6 with operator Paul Mills. County costs shift: Cheyenne County funds bookmobile service countywide, Kimball County continues demonstration, Nebraska Public Library Commission funds ongoing. Reads like a local community listing of routes and dates.
Deuel County historical committee from the county centennial association met with Big Springs and Chappell representatives to plan a Deuel County Historical Society. A chapter will operate in both towns with a museum in each, keeping papers and artifacts in localities.
Senator Fleming says he backed the state income tax bill and would withdraw the sales tax proposal if the income tax bill is approved. He notes the sales tax would stay in the hopper pending income tax results and supports a ballot vote if the income tax goes forward. He also discusses a trade school bill at Sioux Army Depot and an agricultural research center plan, and expects the session to end after July 4.
The Trailblazers Antique Auto Club announced a Sidney Tour slated for June 12 and 13 in Sidney. Members from Denver and Sterling Colorado and other Panhandle towns in Nebraska are expected to attend the event.
Lincoln Nebraska Governor Morrison urged President Johnson to declare 20 Panhandle and Southwest Nebraska counties disaster areas to gain federal aid. He asked for permission to buy and graze on diverted and conservation reserve land and to plant feed without affecting feed grain base. Morrison pressed for a livestock feed program and noted drought has damaged wheat, depleted feed reserves, and raised credit costs and interest rates. The counties named are Kimball Banner Scotts Bluff Sioux Box Butte Dawes Morrill Cheyenne Sheridan Garden Deuel Keith Lincoln Perkins Chase Hayes Dundy Hitchcock Red Willow Frontier.
Deuel County voters will go to the polls on May 25 to decide on building a rest home at Chappell as part of Miller Memorial Hospital. The $195,000 bond would be 40 percent Hill-Burton funded, with the rest repaid over 15 years.
Dix Plains Historical Society holds its spring meeting at Dix Lodge Hall at 2 p.m. Sunday. Public invited. W. B. Cargill, former Observer editor and publisher, and Charles Campbell will reminisce about early Dix days. Bring scrapbooks of historical interest. Drive carefully.
Nebraska retail sales in March rose one percent from March 1964 but fell 3.4 percent from February 1965. Beatrice and Columbus led state gains while Sidney and Chadron reported declines. Fairbury posted the largest February to March retail surge with hard goods sales up about 2.5 times. General activity across 18 of 21 cities increased 3.6 percent from March 1964.
