Memorial Day Services Planned Across Cheyenne County

Memorial Day programs are scheduled Sunday May 30 and Monday May 31 in Sidney Weyerts Lodgepole Potter Gurley and Dalton cemeteries. In Sidney the observance May 30 at 2 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery east of town is organized by the American Legion and VFW with the Sidney High School band performing. The color guard and firing squad will march from the cemetery gates to the Unknown Soldier grave, wreath to be laid by Vernon Anderson, with Oscar Hollinrake as master of ceremonies and Rev. Drexel von Forell delivering the address.

Memorial Fund Aids Family Of Jim Langdon

Mrs. H C Q Nelson chairs parents' group seeking Sidney High School Class of 1964 donations for a memorial to Jim Langdon. Gifts may be left at 2616 El Rancho Road. Memorial fund will be given to the Langdon family as services set for Thursday at 2 PM at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev Henry Monnich officiating and burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorial Day speaker from Crawford Neb to address Sidneys observance

Col W R Rawie a career U S Army officer of 25 years will speak at Sidney Memorial Day ceremonies on May 30 at 2 p m in Greenwood Cemetery. He served in North Africa Sicily and Normandy and fought in Korea earning multiple decorations including the Legion of Honor and Croix de Guerre. He taught ROTC at the University of Nebraska from 1957 to 1961. His address topic is Communist Strategy For World Conquest.

Rainy stretch yields one half inch in Cheyenne area

A second late day storm brought between one third and one half inch of rain to Cheyenne County, with Dalton Gurley spared. FAA recorded 0.45 inch and a sharp drop in temps followed. Sidney 0.37, Lodgepole 0.35, Potter area 0.35, and Lorenco 0.3 to 0.5 inch ranged. Dalton and Gurley saw minimal rainfall.

Trio in jail break attempt ends at Chappell jail

Sheriff Floyd Stahr took Charles Smith Ralph Temple and Ivan Van Engen to Lincoln after they were convicted of armed robbery and attempted jailbreak in Delmont. Smith received five years in the Nebraska Penal Complex while Temple and Van Engen got three years apiece. The group tried to escape by removing a window and weights to breach cement. They were discovered late May 13 and removed to the cell block.

State Road Needs Given More Study

Lincoln meeting of the State Highway Advisory Commission urged a targeted study of Nebraska highways to improve results from existing revenue, with emphasis on county level use. A $300,000 Legislative Council interim study was approved, and a county matching fund idea was floated to better control road funds locally.

The U S Army Supply and Maintenance Command in Washington conducts sessions to explain new cost accounting for depots with manual systems. Attendees include 27 personnel from Washington, D C, Letterkenny, Pa, igloo, S C, Charleston, S C, Flagstaff, Ariz, Savanna, Ga, Hermiston, Ore, Gallup, N M, with Sioux Depot staff in Sidney. The meeting began Monday at the Sioux Officers Open Mess and runs through Thursday.
